RJ45 Plug Gold Plating: How to Choose the Right Thickness

When sourcing RJ45 modular plugs, buyers often compare gold plating options such as 3, 6, 15, 30, and 50 microinches. These numbers describe the thickness of the gold deposit—not the Ethernet speed or cable category.

The right choice starts with the applicable connector specification, then considers the operating environment, mating frequency, and required service life. Plating thickness should be evaluated together with contact design and verified product performance.

Why RJ45 Plug Contacts Are Gold Plated

Gold provides a corrosion-resistant surface at the interface between the plug contacts and the jack contacts. Its purpose is to help maintain dependable electrical contact over time.

With otherwise comparable plating systems, a thicker gold deposit generally improves resistance to wear and reduces porosity. However, thickness alone does not guarantee a pore-free coating or a particular service life. The underlying material, surface condition, and plating process also matter. A nickel underplate commonly supports the gold layer and helps limit diffusion from the base metal.

Understanding Microinches and Micrometers

RJ45 contact plating is commonly specified in microinches, written as μin or µin. Some product descriptions use the shorthand u″. Micrometers, written as μm, are a different unit.

1 μin = 0.0254 μm.
Therefore, 50 μin means 1.27 μm—not 50 μm.

Gold plating option Equivalent thickness
3 μin 0.0762 μm
6 μin 0.1524 μm
15 μin 0.3810 μm
30 μin 0.7620 μm
50 μin 1.2700 μm
Gold flash Confirm the specified thickness with the supplier

“Gold flash” describes a thin deposit; it should not be treated as a universally fixed thickness. For purchasing, request a numerical requirement and identify where it applies.

How to Choose the Right Gold Plating Thickness

Start With the Project Specification

Before comparing prices, identify the required connector standard, customer drawing, and acceptance criteria. If a project requires a minimum thickness at the mating contact area, a lower-cost option must still meet that requirement.

Also clarify whether a quoted thickness is a minimum or a nominal value. A nominal 50 μin specification and a guaranteed minimum of 50 μin do not describe the same acceptance requirement.

Consider Mating Frequency

Each insertion and removal creates movement at the contact interface. For comparable contact systems, greater gold thickness can provide additional wear allowance. Thin deposits are generally more sensitive to wear-through.

For frequently reconnected patch cords or equipment connections, ask for mating durability results for the exact plug design and plating option. Do not assume that 50 μin guarantees a fixed number of mating cycles, or that cycle life increases in direct proportion to thickness.

Consider the Operating Environment

Humidity, condensation, contamination, and corrosive exposure can make contact protection more demanding. Porosity in a thin gold deposit can allow the underlying material to corrode.

For exposed installations, evaluate the complete connector assembly, including enclosure protection and environmental test results. Increasing the contact plating thickness does not make an ordinary RJ45 plug waterproof.

Compare Cost Against Verified Requirements

The following table is a purchasing guide, not a classification of Ethernet performance or a substitute for compliance testing.

Option What buyers should check
Gold flash, 3 μin, or 6 μin Whether the thin deposit meets the applicable specification and the required environmental and durability tests
15 μin Whether the exact contact system provides sufficient durability and environmental performance for the project
30 μin Whether the additional thickness satisfies the specified contact requirements and qualification tests
50 μin Whether the quoted value is nominal or minimum, where it is measured, and whether the finished connector meets all project requirements

These are evaluation questions rather than automatic application approvals. Select the lowest-cost option that meets the complete specification and passes qualification.

Does Thicker Gold Plating Improve Ethernet Speed?

Gold plating thickness is not a bandwidth rating. A 50 μin contact finish does not, by itself, make a plug Cat6A or Cat8.

Buyers should specify the required cabling category separately and request the relevant transmission performance evidence for the connector or assembled cord. Gold thickness and category performance belong in separate fields of an OEM specification.

Is 50 μin Gold Plating Enough for PoE or 4PPoE?

Gold thickness alone is insufficient evidence of PoE suitability. When a powered connection is unplugged, arcing can damage the contact interface. EXW describes connector testing under electrical load as part of evaluating PoE and 4PPoE connection performance.

For a PoE project, request evidence covering the intended application, including current-carrying performance, contact resistance, temperature rise, and relevant loaded-disconnection testing. Confirm that the documentation applies to the ordered model and configuration rather than another product in the same range.

What to Confirm With Your RJ45 Plug Supplier

Before approving an order, confirm:

  • The gold thickness, its unit, and whether it is a minimum or nominal requirement.
  • The plated area, especially the surface that mates with the jack contacts.
  • The contact base material and underplating specification.
  • The thickness measurement method, measurement locations, and inspection criteria.
  • Durability and environmental test evidence for the specified configuration.
  • Cable compatibility, including conductor type, conductor size, insulation diameter, and cable outer diameter.

A useful purchasing request is: “Please quote this RJ45 plug with the specified gold thickness at the mating contact area, and confirm the minimum thickness, inspection method, cable compatibility, and applicable qualification reports.”
