How to Specify RJ45 Modular Plugs for OEM Orders
When sourcing RJ45 modular plugs for an OEM project, a request such as “Cat6 plug, 24AWG, with our logo” is a useful starting point. However, the manufacturer needs more information to select a suitable plug and prepare an accurate quotation.
Cable dimensions, plug construction, gold plating, packaging, and acceptance requirements all need to be clear. Confirming these details early helps reduce repeated discussions, sample revisions, and problems during cable assembly.
This guide explains what to include in an RJ45 modular plug specification before placing an OEM order.
1. Start with Six Cable Specifications
The first step is to describe the cable that the plug will terminate. Ningbo EXW uses the following six specifications as the starting point for plug selection.

AWG alone does not describe all the dimensions needed for plug selection. Cables with the same AWG can have different insulation and overall diameters.
Providing these six details helps the manufacturer identify a suitable plug body, wire insert, and contact design. If a dimension is unavailable, identify it as unknown so the manufacturer can advise on the next step.
2. Confirm the Plug Construction
Once the cable specifications are clear, confirm the plug structure and assembly requirements.
Typical choices include:
-
Shielded or unshielded construction.
-
Standard or pass-through design.
-
Long or short plug body.
-
Construction with or without a separate wire insert.
-
Compatible strain relief boot, if required.
Also tell the manufacturer which crimping tool or production equipment you plan to use. Sample evaluation should check the plug with the actual cable and intended termination process.
Let the manufacturer recommend the contact design based on the cable and plug model. Two-prong or three-prong contacts should form part of that compatibility discussion.
Ningbo EXW offers a broad range of standard RJ45 modular plugs. For requirements that need a different structure, in-house R&D and mold development support further product development.
3. Define Gold Plating Requirements Clearly
An OEM specification should state the required gold plating thickness and confirm the areas to be plated.
Ningbo EXW offers the following standard gold plating thickness options:
3, 6, 15, 30, and 50 microinches (µ″).
Use a clear unit in the inquiry, drawing, and purchase order. Gold plating thickness and the thickness of the metal contact itself are separate specifications.
Ask the supplier how it verifies plating thickness and controls production. At Ningbo EXW, contact electroplating takes place in-house, and dedicated X-ray equipment checks gold plating thickness on first and last pieces.
During plug production, AOI systems on each production machine inspect every plug. Plating thickness measurement and AOI inspection are separate quality control steps.
4. Agree on Testing and Acceptance Requirements
Before approving an OEM order, explain any required tests, acceptance criteria, and documentation.
Depending on the selected product and project, relevant tests may include:
-
Contact resistance and insulation resistance.
-
Withstanding voltage.
-
Cable retention or tensile testing.
-
Mating cycle testing.
-
Salt spray or temperature and humidity testing.
-
Transmission performance testing for the intended cable assembly.
You do not need to define every test method yourself. Share your project specification or customer requirements, and agree on the applicable tests with the manufacturer.
Confirm which checks form part of routine production inspection and which require sample testing or separate project validation. Also agree on whether test reports are required.
For compliance documentation, identify the destination market and request the documents applicable to the selected model, including CE and relevant UL documentation. Any ETL, DELTA, GHMT, or 4PPoE requirements should also be checked against the specific product and scope.
5. Specify Branding, Packaging, and Order Details
OEM requirements should be documented as clearly as the product specifications.
For branding, provide your logo artwork, preferred location, and any appearance requirements. Ningbo EXW supports customized logos on the plug latch, with in-house tooling support.
For packaging, confirm:
-
Bag, jar, or box packaging.
-
Number of plugs per package.
-
Label wording, part numbers, and barcodes.
-
Required accessories, such as inserts or boots.
-
Outer carton and shipping mark requirements.
Ningbo EXW offers different packaging formats and quantities, including automatic small-pack packaging from 1 to 100 pieces.
Include the order quantity and requested delivery date in your inquiry. Standard products have no MOQ at Ningbo EXW. For customized products, MOQ depends on the specifications and customization requirements. Lead time should be confirmed for the actual order.
6. Approve Samples and Record the Final Specification
Before mass production, evaluate samples using the intended cable and crimping process.
Check wire insertion, crimping results, plug fit, appearance, and any agreed performance requirements. Where branding or packaging is customized, approve those details as well.
Record the approved model, drawing revision where applicable, plating specification, packaging, and acceptance requirements. Keep an approved reference sample when practical.
Production consistency also depends on material identification and changeover controls. Ningbo EXW's documented manufacturing procedures include first-piece confirmation, material checks against work orders, changeover clearance, and identification of nonconforming products.
For projects requiring development, Ningbo EXW can work with customers through sample evaluation, testing, and design refinement before mass production.
